Learning Nights

Typically twice a year, OCC holds Learning Nights to provide opportunities for members to learn new skills in a short, quick hit fashion.  On each night, club volunteers share their expertise on particular topics.

External Education (Workshops and Courses)

Durham College, through its Continuing Education Program, offers courses for beginning photographers.  Running Sep-Dec (Level 1) and Jan-Apr (Level 2), you can learn about camera settings, composition, use of flash, working with subjects (both human and other) and specialized forms of photography such as night or macro.  Each course runs once a week for 3 hours.  For more information, click below.

Workshops are a popular way to learn a new skill.  These are short-duration (1/2 day or full day) sessions typically offered by photographers for photographers.  Each year, we’ll canvas members on their workshop interests.  Depending on the cost and complexity of the subject, some workshops will be designed and delivered by our own members and some will be sourced externally.  For workshops delivered by our own members, visit the Workshops page.

Henry’s Cameras, a club sponsor, offers both online training and in-store photography workshops and seminars.  Locations vary and include their Oshawa store.  Some sessions are FREE.  To see their latest offerings, click below:

If you are over 55, the Oshawa Seniors Centre offers photography workshops several times each year.  You need to become a member of the Centre ($16) before you can register for a workshop.  Workshop fees are typically very reasonable ($25-$50).   To see what’s on offer now, go to:

The public libraries in Durham Region also offer free online learning experiences, often through partnerships with providers such as LinkedIn Learning (formerly Lynda.com).  LinkedIn Learning, available through the Whitby Public Library, has a wide variety of photography courses available – for beginners through experts, for image capture and in-camera techniques all the way through advanced editing in Lightroom and Photoshop.  A library card is required, along with a PIN, obtained from the library main desk.  The Whitby Public Library accepts registrations from anyone in Durham Region.
