Educational Resources Page

Last Update: April 21, 2009 The following pages have been assembled by the OCC Education committee to provide sources of print and web based information for its members. 1. OCC EDUCATIONAL LINKS ON THE WEB The OCC Education Committee web-information page provides a selection of links to photography tutorials and sites with significant informational articles using a web service called "Netvibes". *(Netvibes is a free personalized homepage which allows you to add 200+ modules like RSS feeds, Internet links, Flikr photos and widgets such as weather, email, etc.) We are using the public page which allows for anyone to view, but not to add or change content. It is a simple task to create your own personal page and import content from the OSS page to your own if you wish. If you are interested in doing this, take a look at the Netvibes website and take a tour. One objective of the OCC Education portfolio is to promote educational resources in many formats. The OCC Executive Committee considered the possibility of owning a library of resource materials to lend freely to its members. After some discussion it was concluded that this approach is neither feasible nor practical for many reasons. However, an on-line library page offers members a platform for sharing personal resources, making recommendations about photography books and to show what may be available to members through their local library. LibraryThing is a free on-line library organizer that would accomplish this task. How it works: OCC members who have collections of photography related materials are able to join the LibraryThing website and make their collections available virtually to the other members of the club. A list is provided at the bottom of this page of member's collections that are already in place. The Oshawa Camera Club Recommendations page is comprised of materials a vailable from Public Libraries in Ontario. If you would like to list your collection go to the LibraryThing website and set up a free membership. Once you have a collection listed in this resource, please contact Maureen McVarish at mmcvarish@aei.ca with the URL that is provided by this site so it can be added to the list. Acquiring materials: If you see a title that you would like to read, you can either purchase it at your local bookstore, or online from Chapters or Amazon, or you can borrow it freely from your local library. Your Public Library: You are entitled to a free membership at the Public Library system in the municipality where you live, work, or attend school. First check the catalogue of your local library to see if they have the item you wish to borrow in stock. This page provides the catalogues of the libraries from the Durham Region. An individual Public Library cannot possibly own every title, but they provide a service called Interlibrary Loan. This service can borrow materials freely from most public libraries in the province and have it delivered to your local library. If you want your library to borrow a title for you through Interlibrary loan, provide as much information about the title as possible. You may do this in person or by telephone. Some libraries will accept online requests, check out their website.
